30 years a Worker

30 years ago in October 1990 I got out of my bed, put on my new business suit and walked into a new world, the working world, one which has been part of my life ever since.

I predicted that I would leave it all behind within 15 years. Failure was not a consideration.

Nothing could have fully prepared me for the 30 year journey ahead. On that day, my heart beating with adrenaline, I was naive to all of it. I had no idea of business politics, personal ambition, the creation of new companies, improvement of existing situations, let alone the professional world of finance that I had chosen to immerse myself in.

I did not know that I would work for 28 businesses, in 35 countries across 3 continents, that I would see handguns on meeting tables, design anti-terrorist getaway plans, fly across the world in Economy, Business and First Class, live on Unemployment Benefit ($40 per week), lose my job multiple times, start a number of my own businesses, watch mine and other people’s dreams disappear under my feet, make the news, write the news. It was just the start of an adventure.

Today feels much the same.

After some thought, I have decided to mark this milestone with a commitment to try to find a way to return life’s favour of a varied and colourful series of experiences. My chosen medium will be digital, social and available for all. My topic will be Finance, with guns, perhaps terrorists, difficult mountains and blue skies. No doubt my audience will start small, and perhaps will stay small. That’s OK but if what I can share proves to be interesting and helpful to others then maybe it will grow on its own account. Let’s see.

If you are interested, you can follow some of my old and hopefully many of my new adventures and thoughts as I share them here in "Cooking the Books".

I hope that this post will inspire others of my age to mark the moment in a similar way when the right time comes.
